Poultry Farming Business for poor families

Poultry Farming for Livelihood Improvement and Poverty Alleviation

We at Crisis Aid strongly believe in helping people earn a decent living and become financially independent and self-sufficient, instead of providing them with continuous assistance. In this way they don’t have to be regularly provided with food, medicines, shelter, clothing etc. They will be able to earn their own living.

There is evidence that investments in small‐scale poultry farming generate handsome returns and contribute to poverty reduction and increased food security in regions where a large share of the population keeps some poultry birds.

Providing a poor family with five chickens and one rooster, or a flock of 25 free-range chicks as well as feeding supplies). This will enable the family to sell the eggs and breed the birds. This livelihood will bring in a small but regular income for families who otherwise have nothing and depend on continuous handouts.

This self-employment philosophy is derived from the following incident during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him):

A man of the Ansar came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and begged from him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked him if he has anything in his house. He replied: “Yes, a piece of cloth, a part of which we wear and a part of which we spread (on the ground), and a wooden bowl from which we drink water”. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked him to bring those items to him and helped him sell them for two dirhams. He (peace be upon him) asked the Ansari to buy food with one dirham, buy an axe with the second dirham and go and gather firewood and sell it. The man went away, and gathered firewood and sold it. When he had earned ten dirhams, he came to the prophet and told him that he had bought a garment and food with his earnings. (Abu Dawud, Hadith 1637).
