Can You Give Zakat to a Mosque?

Many Muslims ask whether it’s permissible to give Zakat directly to a mosque. While mosques are essential centres for worship, learning, and community support, Islamic scholars generally agree that Zakat must be given directly to the eligible recipients outlined in the Qur’an (Surah At-Tawbah 9:60). These include the poor, the needy, those appointed to collect Zakat, people whose hearts are to be reconciled, captives, debtors, those striving in the cause of Allah, and stranded travellers.

Although some mosques may administer Zakat distribution programs, giving Zakat directly to a mosque is only appropriate if the mosque runs verified, transparent schemes that ensure funds reach the rightful beneficiaries. Without such accountability, donations risk falling short of their sacred purpose. Proper Zakat giving must honour its intent—uplifting those truly eligible and preserving the trust placed in this vital pillar of Islam.
