Fidyah vs Kaffarah Ramadan

Many Muslims feel uncertain about whether they should pay Fidyah or Kaffarah during Ramadan. Both relate to missed fasts, but they apply to very different situations. Understanding the difference matters because each has a specific purpose, condition, and method of payment in Islam.

Fidyah applies when a person cannot fast due to long term illness or old age and has no realistic ability to make up the fasts later. In this case, Islam allows compensation by feeding someone in need for each missed day. Fidyah ensures that those unable to fast still share in the spirit of Ramadan through supporting the poor.

Kaffarah applies when a fast is deliberately broken during Ramadan without a valid Islamic excuse. This is a serious matter and carries a heavier obligation. Kaffarah requires feeding sixty people for each fast that was broken intentionally. It exists to address the gravity of the action and restore responsibility through significant support to others.

The key difference lies in intention and ability. Fidyah relates to inability. Kaffarah relates to deliberate action. Paying the correct one ensures your responsibility is fulfilled properly and removes doubt from your worship.

Crisis Aid helps Muslims understand and fulfil these obligations correctly. As a UK registered Islamic charity, Crisis Aid follows Islamic guidance and UK regulations in how Fidyah and Kaffarah are handled, ensuring clarity, accountability, and care.

How to Pay the Correct Obligation Through Crisis Aid

If you missed fasts due to illness or old age and cannot make them up, Fidyah may apply to you. If you broke a fast deliberately without a valid reason, Kaffarah is required. In some cases, a person may also need to make up missed fasts alongside paying the relevant compensation. Knowing which applies to your situation is essential.

Paying through a trusted charity removes uncertainty. Crisis Aid ensures Fidyah is used to feed those in need and that Kaffarah fulfils its requirement by providing food to the correct number of people. This allows your payment to meet its Islamic purpose fully.

Fulfilling the correct obligation brings peace of mind. It allows you to focus on worship, reflection, and sincerity during Ramadan without lingering doubt about what you owe.

If you are unsure whether Fidyah or Kaffarah applies to you, take time to understand your situation and act with intention. Pay the correct obligation through Crisis Aid and fulfil your duty with confidence and clarity this Ramadan.
