What Is Sadaqah Jariyah and Why Is It Important?

Fitrana, also known as Zakat al-Fitr, is a compulsory charity that every eligible Muslim must pay before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. Its purpose is twofold: to purify the fasting person from any shortcomings during Ramadan, and to ensure that those in need can celebrate Eid with dignity and joy.

The timing of your Fitrana is crucial. While it can be paid a day or two before Eid—during the final nights of Ramadan—the ideal time to give it is before the Eid prayer on the day of Eid itself. If given after the prayer, it no longer counts as Zakat al-Fitr, but instead becomes a general Sadaqah.

As narrated by Ibn Abbas (RA), the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory to cleanse the fast from idle talk and wrongdoing and to provide for the poor. He said that whoever gives it before the Eid prayer will have it accepted as Zakat, but if given afterward, it is counted as ordinary charity.
