What Is Qurbani?
Qurbani is the Islamic ritual sacrifice of an animal during Eid al-Adha, symbolising submission, gratitude, and sharing blessings with those in need.
The Meaning and Significance of Qurbani
Qurbani, also known as Udhiya, is the sacred ritual of animal sacrifice performed by Muslims around the world during the festival of Eid al-Adha. It honours the devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who was willing to sacrifice his son in complete obedience to Allah. In His mercy, Allah replaced the son with a ram—marking a moment of deep faith, trust, and submission.
This act of sacrifice is a powerful expression of worship, reminding Muslims to surrender to Allah’s will and share their blessings with those less fortunate. Qurbani is performed by slaughtering a permissible animal—such as a sheep, goat, cow, or camel—according to Islamic guidelines during the days of Eid al-Adha.
The meat is then divided into three equal parts: one-third for the family, one-third for relatives and friends, and one-third for the poor and needy. This sharing reflects the true spirit of Eid—generosity, community, and care for others.
Qurbani is considered wajib (obligatory) for every financially able Muslim. It is both a spiritual duty and a social responsibility—drawing us closer to Allah through obedience while also providing food and comfort to those who are struggling.
Through this meaningful act, Muslims strengthen their connection to their Creator, honour a timeless tradition, and extend mercy to those in need—embodying the values of faith, compassion, and unity.
